In 1989 David Mulley and Cressida Granger visited Edward Craven-Walker, inventor of the Lava Lamp. They had both been selling lava lamps, and decided to open a shop. They did a deal with Mr and Mrs Walker and wrote this on a peice of A4 paper; they would take over the running of the business and any profit made they would keep. After 5 years they acquired 100% of the company and Mr and Mrs Walker honoured every point written on the paper. Over the next 10 years they re-launched the lava lamp, improved the formula and changed the name from Crestworth to mathmos after the bubbling force in the cult film Barbarella. The company went from strength to strength and in 1999 David decided to move on, leaving Cressida to take the business onto its' next phase.
