Modern twist on traditional idea from mathmos. Babushka is a modern version of the classic Russian Doll. The different doll sizes are revealed in a sequence of different coloured lights and effects. When red the infinity effect is visible revealing a seemingly never ending row of red dolls. When blue the edges of the larger dolls are lit. Babushka continues its light effect through red to pink and purple and on to blue, displaying different effects as it goes. It is made from mouth blown glass and perspex, and is available in a red to blue colourway. Its' light effect is created by chip controlled LEDs, and you simply turn it on and off by pushing down on the top of the light. In 1989 David Mulley and Cressida Granger visited Edward Craven-Walker, inventor of the Lava Lamp. They had both been selling lava lamps, and decided to open a shop. They did a deal with Mr and Mrs Walker and wrote this on a peice of A4 paper; they would take over the running of the business and any profit made they would keep. After 5 years they acquired 100% of the company and Mr and Mrs Walker honoured every point written on the paper. Over the next 10 years they re-launched the lava lamp, improved the formula and changed the name from Crestworth to mathmos after the bubbling force in the cult film Barbarella. The company went from strength to strength and in 1999 David decided to move on, leaving Cressida to take the business onto its' next phase. Since 2000 mathmos has concentrated on product innovation staying in the world of light in the home. They specialise in coming up with completely new light technologies and work with really exciting designers to realize beautiful, innovative yet affordable products. Size: dia 9cm x h15.5cm.
